Nursing home company to settle $38 million for alleged misconduct

Posted under Medical Malpractice

One of the biggest nursing home operators in the U.S. will pay a settlement of $38 million due to fraud allegations and the “disturbing” abuses to its residents, an article on The Telegraph stated October 10.

Reports said Extendicare Health Services and subsidiary ProStep wrongfully billed the government, and provided poor-quality care to the elderly. An extensive investigation conducted by federal authorities found that cases of injuries and illnesses of elderly were rampant in many of the Extendicare nursing home facilities. The Justice Department officials also stated that, at some branches, the company had an insufficient number trained nurses. The majority of the settlement will go to eight states including Wisconsin.

Sadly, on occasion, the elderly in nursing home facilities suffer serious injuries and abuses at the hands of their caretakers. If you suspect this at a nursing home where your family member resides, getting a lawyer’s help is important to hold negligent parties liable for your loved one’s sufferings.
