$25.3M awarded to Milwaukee woman in medical malpractice case

Posted under Medical Malpractice

On July 7, a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article reported that a Milwaukee jury awarded $25.3 million to a woman who lost all of her limbs due to medical negligence.

Reports mention that 53-year-old mother, Ascaris Mayo had all her limbs removed in 2011 due to a severe Strep A infection. Mayo was in septic shock after her blood was infected from the condition. This shock lead doctors to amputate all of her limbs.

Doctor Wyatt Jaffe and assistant Donald Gibson reportedly failed to give Ascaris “alternative medical diagnoses.” Mayo’s legal counsel, Daniel Rottier argued that his client was never informed about the severity of her condition. Defense lawyers are expected to negotiate to lower the awarded damages.
