This month, the U.S. Department of Transportation released a report on fatal car accidents occurring in the United States between 2004 and 2008.  According to the report, 187,796 fatal car accidents occurred in the country in the four year period.

Additionally, the report states that 94 percent of fatal car accidents involved a single fatality.  Main causes of fatal car accidents include route, speeding, traffic, traffic controls, road conditions and weather.  The DOT notes that distracted driving and drunk driving were also common factors in fatal car accidents.

6 percent of the accidents occurred in multi-vehicle accidents, 35 percent of fatal accidents were two-vehicle collisions and 58 percent were single-vehicle accidents.
