Can city or state governments be held liable for accidents on lakes?

Posted under Uncategorized

During the winter season, families and friends often go ice skating on Wisconsin's frozen lakes. In some cases, the ice may crack, causing the skaters to suffer skating and ice injuries.

Many people believe that city and state governments should be held liable for the medical expenses because the lake is public property. However, in most cases, state and city governments cannot be held liable. Governments escape liability because the law generally assumes that individuals bear responsibility for any foreseeable injuries related to ice skating.
